4D 2004 Introduces Huge Savings in Web Application Serving and Web Services
Publishing

We've made some changes to the way we license Web services and Web servers
in 4th Dimension 2004. Right about now you're probably thinking, "Oh no, not
another Web server license change..." But these changes are based on
feedback from you, our developer community, and are designed to make it much
more attractive to serve Web applications or publish Web services from your
4D-based applications.

First, let's look at what hasn't changed in 4D 2004. 4D 2003 is capable of
consuming Web services (Web services Client) and publishing Web services
(Web services Server). The Web services Client capability was bundled with
4D 2003 as part of the standard package. So, for example, you can build a
Web services Client that talks to Amazon, etc., without any extra licenses.
4D 2004 uses this same licensing model.

Now lets talk about the exciting new changes. To act as a Web services
server in 4D 2003 (i.e., to publish a Web service) you had to purchase a Web
Extension License (4D WEL). This license enables the built in Web server and
enables both Web application capabilities as well as Web services server
capabilities. 4D WEL 2003 is priced at $899.

Many of the developers we talked to told us that many of you would like to
publish Web services without publishing a Web application, and vice versa.
With this in mind, we decided to un-bundle Web services from the 4D WEL. So,
for 4D 2004 we are reducing the price of the old 4D WEL 2003 to $499 and
removing the Web services publishing capability. To reflect that 4D WEL is
now only for running Web Applications, we are renaming it 4D Web Server.
Simply put, creating applications that run on the Web in 4D 2004 is now $400
cheaper than 4D 2003.

We've created a separate product license for Web services publishing. If you
want your application to publish Web services (i.e. to act as a Web services
Server), you only need acquire the 4D Web services Server for $499-Again, a
savings of $400 over the corresponding 4D 2003 prices!

Of course, if you still want to publish both Web services and serve Web
applications, simply purchase the bundle of both products (4D Web Server and
4D Web services Server) for $899, the same price as the 4D WEL in 4D 2003.

So, as you can see, nothing is lost but much is gained! We hope you'll share
our excitement over these changes. We're confident the advanced new features
in both the Web Server and Web services in 4D 2004 will enable tremendous
opportunities for developers to create innovative, cost-effective
applications.

Sincerely,

The 4D Team

PS: Of course the prices apply to all configurations-Standalone, 4D Client
and 4D Server

PPS: These prices are of course list price and you should apply your
Partners discount against these prices.
